Unit Plan: Lord of the Flies
8th Grade English Language Arts
In this unit, students will be reading Lord of the Flies, an 8th grade curriculum novel. After reading the novel, students will be given a Performance Task. Their Performance Task is to work in pairs to create an Island Survival Guide, utilizing what they have learned and evaluated from Lord of the Flies.
This unit plan consists of 12 different lessons and activities designed to push students to think critically about the text and essential questions, as well as prepare them for their Performance Task.
Essential Questions:
- What attracts us to stories of suspense?
- Are humans inherently good or evil?
- How do suspense stories hook and hold readers?
- What is necessary for survival?
- How can rules encourage “civilized” behavior?
